African Students for Interfaith Tolerance (ASFIT) have presented assorted Personal Protective Equipment and other items to the needy and old-age people resident in Walewale and its surrounding communities within the North East Region.
The items included hand sanitisers, detergents, boxes of nose masks, foodstuffs and soft drinks which were presented to the elderly and needy people, and were part of a broader contribution from ASFIT support to the vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic. The donation was also to commemorate the organisation’s one-year anniversary.
Executive Director of ASFIT, Mr. Issah Toha Shamsoo, presenting the items on behalf of the organisation expressed satisfaction with the project’s success, adding that: “ It is an honour to celebrate the one-year anniversary of ASFIT, because this means we are making progress”.
He explained that the exercise is part of a line-up of various activities to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the organisation amid the current coronavirus pandemic.
He indicated that the organization, which was founded as a result of horrific terrorist attacks in New Zealand and Sri Lanka, has over 100 members in the various Ghanaian universities nationwide.
Among other objectives of the organisation, Mr. Shamsoo said, is to promote interfaith tolerance and harmony throughout Africa through the use of educational programmes and dialogue, as well as to promote the acceptance of differing religious beliefs and traditions for a more peaceful society.
As part of the activities, a student’s call to prayer was organised online and led by young Christians and Muslims via the Zoom cloud meeting application. It was also used as an opportunity to seek healing for the sick, peace for humanity and a cure to coronavirus.
Board Chairman of ASFIT, Dr. Yussif Mijirah Dokurugu, congratulated members for their dedication and sense of responsibility towards helping the destitute in society.
He said: “In the near-future, many more lives will be impacted positively by our activities, and we look forward to this as an organisation”.
He urged students to understand the dynamics of human relations and endeavour to support each other during difficult times – adding that this is the organisation’s core mandate.
