What is the World Interfaith Harmony Week?

World Interfaith Harmony Week (WIHW) is an annual observance celebrated during the first week of February (February 1–7). Established by a United Nations General Assembly resolution in 2010, WIHW is a global call to foster harmony, mutual understanding, and cooperation among people of all faiths and beliefs. The initiative was proposed by King Abdullah II of Jordan, inspired by the message of the Amman Interfaith Message, which emphasizes love of God, love of the neighbor, and love of the good as shared values across religions.

The week serves as a platform for individuals, organizations, and communities worldwide to celebrate diversity and promote actions that break down barriers caused by religious, cultural, and ideological differences.

ASFIT’s Contribution to World Interfaith Harmony Week

As a youth-led peacebuilding organization, African Students For Interfaith Tolerance (ASFIT) has consistently recognized and celebrated World Interfaith Harmony Week with activities that bring communities together. Here is how we have marked this important week in past years:

– Community-Based Dialogues

We have organized community dialogues under the theme Building Trust Across Divides.” These discussions encourage participants to explore ways to live peacefully with those they may perceive as “enemies,” “neighbours,” “strangers,” or “friends.” Guided by religious scriptures, these conversations highlight shared values across faiths, fostering understanding and reconciliation.

– Interfaith Sessions in Senior High Schools

ASFIT has also brought interfaith harmony discussions to senior high schools. These sessions provide a platform for students of diverse religious backgrounds to learn about each other’s beliefs and practices. Through this, we hope to address long-standing stereotypes and misconceptions and to help young people develop respect and empathy for others.

How You Can Participate

Everyone has a role to play during World Interfaith Harmony Week. Here are some ways you can get involved:

  • Join ASFIT’s Activities: Participate in our community dialogues, school interfaith sessions, or workshops in the North East region.
  • Host Your Own Event: Organize interfaith gatherings, community projects, or even a simple discussion among friends to promote understanding.
  • Spread Awareness Online: Share positive messages of interfaith harmony on social media using hashtags like #WorldInterfaithHarmonyWeek and #InterfaithHarmony.
  • Volunteer: Partner with ASFIT or similar organizations to support their efforts in building peace and interfaith cooperation.
  • Engage in Acts of Kindness: Celebrate WIHW by reaching out to someone from a different faith tradition and showing kindness or solidarity.
World Interfaith Harmony Week reminds us of the importance of celebrating our diversity and respecting the beliefs of others. At ASFIT, we believe that every individual has a role to play in promoting freedom of religion and belief. Let’s take intentional actions to celebrate our differences, build bridges of understanding, and keep alive the hope of a peaceful, inclusive, and healthy world for all.
