National Dialogue on Ghana’s Youth and Climate Change

Our Executive Director, Issah Toha Shamsoo, had the pleasure of participating in a National Dialogue on “Ghana’s Youth and Climate Change.”

In his contribution, he highlighted the critical intersection between climate change, peace, and security. He underscored that rising temperatures in the Sahel region are pushing nomadic Fulani pastoralists southward into northern Ghana much earlier in the season than usual. This shift is leading to conflicts in local communities.

On agriculture’s impact, he noted that the sector employs over 70% of the population in Ghana’s five northern regions. However, land degradation, erratic rains, and desertification have made rain-fed agriculture highly unreliable, resulting in widespread seasonal unemployment among rural youth.

He called for urgent attention and concerted efforts to address climate-induced conflict across Ghana.
